Hertie AI at Cyber Valley Day
Cyber Valley just celebrated its 10th anniversary in Tübingen, and we were there to present our work on mapping retinal circuits: Hertie AI postdocs Simone Ebert, Jan Lause, and Jonathan Oesterle presented the Eyewire II project. It aims to generate a complete catalogue of cell types and their synaptic wiring in the mouse retina. It is the largest reconstruction of retinal tissue to date, covering a volume roughly 10-100 times larger than previous retinal electron microscopy datasets.
The Hertie Institute for AI in Brain Health is part of the Cyber Valley, which is located in the Stuttgart-Tübingen region and funded by the German Federal State of Baden-Württemberg. The Cyber Valley has partners in academia and industry, including the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, the Universities of Stuttgart and Tübingen, and the companies Amazon, BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
It was great to connect with people from foundations and companies, PhD students, and participants of the Machine Learning Summer School (MLSS) currently taking place in Tübingen. It's good to be part of this ecosystem. Ten years in, it is inspiring to see how much basic research here has turned into start-ups and real-world change.
