Kerol Djoumessi teaches explainable AI in Rwanda

From 8 March to 3 April 2026, the Foundational Methods in Data Science doctoral training school took place at AIMS-RIC (the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences Research and Innovation Centre) in Kigali, Rwanda. Recently graduated Hertie AI PhD Kerol Djoumessi was invited as a lecturer for the introductory course on explainable machine learning (XAI).

The Foundational Methods in Data Science training school brings together doctoral students and early career researchers from across Africa for a 4-week course on modern data science. The training school was part of the broader AIMS network's mission to strengthen advanced research training in mathematical sciences across the continent.

Kerol says "Delivering this course for the first time was both exciting and rewarding. We explored why explainability matters in machine learning, covering approaches from post-hoc explanations to interpretable-by-design models, and concluded with methods for evaluating explanations and key challenges in medical image analysis.
Many thanks to the organizers for the invitation."
