ICML & Hertie Summit 2025

Sam Gijsen Postdoc in the Machine Learning Department presented his EEG-language model research at ICML 2025 in Vancouver, highlighting deep learning applications in neuroscience. He also spoke at the Hertie Summit’s Joint Session, sharing insights alongside other Hertie Fellows.

The International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML) is the premier gathering of professionals dedicated to the advancement of the branch of artificial intelligence known as machine learning.ICML is globally renowned for presenting and publishing cutting-edge research on all aspects of machine learning used in closely related areas like artificial intelligence, statistics and data science, as well as important application areas such as machine vision, computational biology, speech recognition, and robotics.ICML is one of the fastest growing artificial intelligence conferences in the world. Participants at ICML span a wide range of backgrounds, fromacademic and industrial researchers, to entrepreneurs and engineers, to graduate students and postdocs.

“I had the opportunity to attend the ICM L2025 in Vancouver to present a poster on our lab's work. Our research introduces EEG-language models, a novel multimodal approach that learns joint representations from clinical reports and brain recordings. Although neuroscience is a smaller field at ICML (compared to e.g. NeurIPS), the conference still allowed for a lot of valuable domain-specific discussions.  It also provided inspiration by showcasing solutions to adapting deep learning methods to other domains affected with similar challenges as neuroscience. It thereby offered a lot of new perspectives for our research!"

Sam also had the chance to participate in the “Hertie Summit 2025”. He was one of the 8 speaker in the “Joint Session”. The “Joint Session” is the largest joint event of the Hertie Summit and addresses current topics: Experts from the Hertie Fellows circle present their projects and research results, ranging from politics to medicine, in short keynote speeches. This time, the participants are: Dr. Asif Butt, Claudia Müller, Emma de Bourdeille, Daniela Komolafe, Ba Linh Le, Dr. Sam Gijsen, and Poul Schulte-Frankenfeld.
