Research Frontiers Workshop on Scientific Machine Learning (ScML25), Stuttgart, Germany
During the week of October 7–10, 2025, Hertie AI researchers Kerol Djoumessi and Sacha Sokoloski participated in the Research Frontiers Workshop on Scientific Machine Learning (ScML25), held in Stuttgart, Germany.
This highly interactive workshop brought together researchers from a wide range of disciplines — including physics, engineering, and the philosophy of science — to explore how machine learning interacts with scientific inquiry, defines new research frontiers, and fosters breakthroughs through interdisciplinary collaboration.
At the workshop, Kerol presented his work on making black-box models self-explainable, while Sacha shared his research on analytically tractable probabilistic models during the poster presentation session. The event offered a stimulating environment to exchange ideas about machine learning with philosophers and scientists from diverse backgrounds.
“The fusion of perspectives from physics, data science, and philosophy around AI made the workshop a truly unique and enriching experience”.
